We are super excited to announce that seminal krautrock / psych / post-rock heavyweights Maserati will be appearing at Roadburn 2013 on Thursday, April 18 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Their style is rather atypical post-rock, combining krautrock rhythms inspired by the likes of Neu!, space rock in the vein of Pink Floyd, and a Giorgio Moroder-esque penchant for epic composition.
Maserati released their latest album earlier this year (Maserati VII), their first album that did not contain any material played by tragically deceased drummer Jerry Fuchs. Happily, the music on Maserati VII continues in the motorikly-propelled direction of their earlier releases, the relentless drums bolstering a heavily psychedelic guitar approach, and a sound that doesn’t shy away from liberal electronic flourishes.

We’re elated to announce that Oakland, CA heavy metal juggernaut High on Fire will bring their enormous sonic assault to Roadburn Festival 2013 for two exclusive shows.
On Thursday, April 18th, High on Fire will play their landmark debut, The Art of Self Defense, in its entirety. Initially released in 2000 by Man’s Ruin Records (and now reissued by Southern Lord), The Art of Self Defense displayed a new, intensely primal attitude for stoner rock / metal that broke away from the laid back desert bands.
The Art of Self Defense is also fulcrum between the band’s psychedelic, slow gut-churning sludge-rock, and what would become later High On Fire. On Saturday, April 20th, Matt Pike, Des Kensel and Jeff Matz will bring their brute force musicianship and thundering roar, anchored in an endlessly captivating, punkishly frantic sound to Roadburn 2013. This set will showcasing High on Fire‘s obsession with Motörheadish thrash, stunningly renderd on instant classics like De Vermis Mysteriis, Snakes for the Divine, Death Is This Communion and Blessed Black Wings.
Over two shows at Roadburn 2013, High on Fire, will show their groundbreaking evolution from psychedelic doom metal to the metallic speed demon the band is now. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor High on Fire‘s skyscraper levelling type of heavy metal as their body of work can be heart and felt throughout many bands present at this year’s Roadburn.

Two bands / artists that spread their ‘creepy crawlie’ subliminal influence over the Electric Wizard sound.
“Cult (and we mean really fuckin kkvvuullttttt!!??) Pittsburgh Doom pioneers Dream Death are back from the dead!!, says Jus Oborn. “1987′s Journey into Mystery LP was a blueprint for a ‘chosen few’ doom freaks… evil churning riffs, proto 70s influences, HP lovecraft / weird tales inspired lyrics and tortured ‘real’ vocals. Everyone else was ‘thrashing’ but this was it… ominous, foreboding, twisted and evil and it definitley pointed us in the right direction. We are unbelievably excited to witness them live at last and hope you will join us in screaming every word from Back From The Dead: “I hope you enjoyed the living me cos the dead one never ends.”
“And from even further into the abyss we present legendary aural terrorists and brain agitators Psychic TV / PTV3!!! Formed in the early 80′s after the disbanding of Throbbing Gristle, this legendary outfit was always a dark subliminal influence. Their live performances would still haunt various festivals when we were teenagers and they were always scary… their fans , their image. Back then it meant something to shock people, to wake them up from their government imposed comas.”
“I also remember their fake (?) cult Temple Ov Psychic Youth, which had a huge influence on us and the early black metal scene, they even got satanic ritual footage on the BBC. Its all been done before kids and it started here.”
“Even More Incredible bands to be announced SOON !!!”

We’re very pleased to introduce Belgium’s very own Raketkanon (RKTKN) to our Roadburn Festival attendees on Saturday, April 20th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.
Raketkanon‘s debut album, RKTKN #1, is a combination of sludge, experimental drift and chaotic psychedelica. Think Melvins meets Tomahawk by way of early Butthole Surfers — down tuned guitars, deformed vocals and droney bass synths, coupled with an ear for great songs, make Raketkanon one of the most interesting bands in Belgium today.
We’re pretty sure that all of you will feel the very same about RKTKN #1, as soon as you hear the album via the soundcloud player below. See you all down in the front on Saturday, April 20th.

Their name has perennially appeared on Roadburn Festival wish lists. Like many of you, we have been dreaming of finally getting a chance to see them live. And now, for the first time since touring with Cathedral and Sleep in 1993, doom pioneers Penance will return to Europe for an exclusive appearance at Roadburn 2013!
The ’93 tour was followed by the release of their brilliant second album Parallel Corners on Century Media in 1994. Melodic, thundering, groovy and complete with the occasional exuberant “Oh YEAH!” the record easily stands the test of time.
When asked to comment on it during a 2005 interview, drummer Mike Smail said: “[Parallel Corners] was a loosely structured LP; heavy riffs strung together with improvised loose jamming…I really liked the freedom of that.”
We are thrilled to host guitarist Terry Weston, bassist Rich Freund and drummer Mike Smail as they reunite with vocalist Lee Smith for an exclusive European appearance at Roadburn 2013 on Thursday, April 18th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

We’re very pleased to announce that California’s black metal horde Ash Borer will be playing the 2013 festival at the 013 venue on Saturday, April 20. Ash Borer is one of the leading forces in U.S. black metal, combining an old-school sound with truly epic songwriting, like their Cascadian black metal brethren Wolves In The Throne Room. Their twin guitar work is particularly unique and compelling as they often maintain harmony while playing different progressions, and it is buttressed by furious and complex.
In only 4 years, Ash Borer have managed to carve out an important path for USBM. While many of the early USBM bands have either run their course or veered into black metal fusion, Ash Borer has created a distinctive and relevant sound that manages to make colossal, labyrinthine songs that are completely true to the lo-fi necro black metal sound.
Their latest release, Cold Of Ages, is a great example of the band’s ability to incorporate chilling ambient passages and occasional influences of doom and drone into their songs while still identifying totally as black metal.

We at Roadburn are very excited to report that The Atlas Moth will be appearing at the 2013 festival on Thursday, April 18 at the 013 venue.
One of the most eclectic and interesting new metal bands in years, Chicago’s The Atlas Moth are a frothing cauldron of metal styles… touching on stoner, sludge, blues, psych, hard rock, post rock (among other styles!) all forming a deliriously coherent and wildly original concoction.
Their 2011 album, An Ache For The Distance exploded them onto the scene with its relentless listenability, truly a band that offers something for everyone.
