Missing Kansas Man Found Dead Weeks After Disappearance From Bowling Alley
Over a month after being reported missing, Kansas man Ian Alexander Shelton has been found in a popular local lake only a few miles from the bowling alley where he was last seen. When locals spotted something floating in the lake, authorities were called, and his remains were pulled from the water.
Shelton was reported missing on December 2 and was the subject of ongoing searches. His last known location was the Let’s Roll Seneca bowling alley. Authorities began asking the community for help in his search on 5 December. Police confirmed that a body pulled from Lake Afton, Kansas, was that of the missing man more than a month later.
On the night Shelton went missing, he had been marked as a considerable risk. The low temperatures, combined with the clothes he was wearing, increased his chances of freezing. Initial searches were fruitless, and on December 5, members of the local area were alerted to his missing status.
When local detectives moved the search to the Lake Afton area, they were able to confirm that Shelton had been sighted by the water on 3 December. He had been seen in the early hours of the morning, and detectives concluded that the missing Kansas man had been experiencing a mental health crisis.
By December 9, local police launched a large-scale search, covering 3.5 square miles in and around Lake Afton Park. However, by 10 December, there was still no trace, and the search was called off. Despite the efforts of authorities, friends, and family, Shelton was still considered missing.
Many of Shelton's friends and family were involved in searching for the missing man. The waiting, not knowing where their friend and family member was, took an emotional toll. Speaking to Kake.com, Justin Stroud, one of his childhood friends, spoke of the pain of uncertainty: "It’s waiting for an answer. It’s just been like holding your breath for as long as you can, hoping for air."
The answer came on January 10 when a report of a body being pulled from Lake Afton resulted in the positive identification of Shelton. Police responded to an object seen floating in the local water, and his body was recovered close to the shore.
More than a month after the Kansas man had gone missing, the mystery of his disappearance had come to a close. Initial reports indicated that when Shelton was seen by the lake, he had been with a woman. However, the police don't currently suspect any foul play. His death isn't being considered suspicious.
However, the case surrounding Shelton is still open and under investigation, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.
